Tips for Choosing Custom Glass Shower Doors

If you’re about to remodel your existing bathroom and shower area you may be considering adding custom glass shower doors to your design.  There are quite a few different designs available to choose from or you may be able to create your own design to better suit your style.  Custom glass shower doors can range from clear frameless designs to etched custom designs.  You are no longer forced to choose from the same designs everyone else sees at the big box home stores.  Creating your own custom glass shower doors will allow you to create a look that will be unique and all yours.

  • If you only have room for a standard shower in your bathroom, you may want to choose doors that are frameless and clear.  When installed properly this design will allow your tile work to be easy viewable without any distortion from frosted glass or pebbled glass.  Keep in mind that if you choose this design the thickness of the glass may actually give the glass a tinted appearance.  Experts suggest that when you choose this design you should always ask for ultra-clear glass to avoid the green tint many of the thicker glass doors have.
  • While frameless glass shower doors are more appealing in certain design scenarios, they may not work for everyone.  If this is the case you may want to choose a standard shower door design.  These shower doors can be made more appealing by having a design etched onto them.  You can either purchase these types of doors with designs already etched onto them or you may want to special order them and choose your own design.  This is a great option for personalizing your shower and not having the same doors as many of your neighbors.
  • If your home features a free-form shower, your only option when it comes to replacing the glass is to have it custom made.  Free-form showers typically do not meet any of the industry standards which make it harder to replace any of the glass.  If your shower features curved glass or odd dimensions your only option will be to have the glass custom designed and cut.  This may make replacing the glass doors and walls of your shower more expensive, but you will be guaranteed that they will fit properly.

There are many different options available when it comes to choosing custom glass shower doors.  If you’re simply looking for an easy replacement, you can always visit your local home improvement store.  But if the look of a design you had a hand in creating appeals to you, custom glass doors may be just what you’re looking for.
